VEVA® and CADO® for the new A2 tunnels.

VEVAs and CADOs for the new A2 tunnels near Utrecht (Netherlands)

The new part of the A2 near Utrecht (Netherlands) is provided with a tunnel. The tunnel with a length of approximately 1 mile and is being built to reduce the nuisance for the surrounding area.

The tunnel consists of 4 tubes. Next to the 2 main lanes for the through traffic, there are also 2 parallel lanes for local traffic to enter the city.

For a safe and responsible handling of the traffic during maintenance or calamities in one or more of the tubes, Jansen Venneboer from Wijhe (the Netherlands) produces the well known VEVA®- and CADO®- installations.

The VEVA® is an automated movable crash barrier for safely guiding road users to another section of the road, motorway lane, or tunnel tube. It can also be used to create flexible lanes.

A CADO® calamity passage can be used to create an opening in the central reservation so that emergency services – police, fire and ambulance personnel – can get to the scene quickly. The time this saves could mean the difference between life and death.

The VEVA®  is by far the most impressive of all the traffic installations in and around the tunnel. 2 movable barriers of 100 meters each ensures correct routing of the traffic. The VEVAs  are handled completely automatic and can be positioned within 6 minutes. Also, the VEVA® is suited with an ingeniously designed crash absorber that gives maximum protection to the people in the car in case of a head-on collision. The VEVA® completely meets the European safety norm EN 1317 and is tested extensively by TNO Netherlands.

To ensure fast arrival times and assistance in the case of a calamity in and around the tunnel, Jansen Venneboer installs 7 CADOs. Opening the barrier is done in 30 seconds for the support vehicle to continue to the scene of the problem. These installations are also completely automated and can be operated onsite as well as from the traffic center.

The installations are designed and realized through System Engineering. This means that the customer demands and specifications are being developed into innovative solutions, in which Jansen Venneboer puts in its specific expertise.

The first part of the installations will be installed shortly. It is expected that the second part will be built later this year.

The project is commissioned to Jansen Venneboer by Cofely Energy & Infra, who realizes this project together with Besix and Dura Vermeer.
